Teaching Fellow Contract: Essential Information

Teaching Fellow Contract: Essential Information

 Appointment and Responsibilities:

  • The Employer will provide the TF with a Letter of Appointment at least two weeks before the start of the Academic Term.
  • All responsibilities of the TF will be outlined in the Teaching Fellow Form (TFF), which the Employer will provide to the TF at least two (2) weeks before the start of the Academic Term.

 E-Contract Creation:

  • By the Tuesday before the Academic Term begins, the Employer will inform the TF about the information needed to create the E-Contract.
  • The TF must provide the required information by the Thursday before the start of the Academic Term.
  • If the TF provides the necessary information on time, the Employer will then complete the E-Contract and send it to the TF by the first Monday of the Academic Term.
  • The TF should sign the E-Contract upon receipt.

TFF Discussion and Signing:

  • The Employment Supervisor (the person named in your TF contracts as your Supervisor) and the TF will meet (or communicate) the week before the Academic Term to discuss and sign the TFF.
  • The TF will receive a copy of the signed TFF.

Midpoint Meeting:

At or around the midpoint of the TF, the Employment Supervisor and the TF will meet to discuss any matters related to the TF.

Additional Work and Compensation:

  • If additional work is required beyond the appointment’s end date, the Employer may offer extra paid hours to the TF at the TA’s hourly rate. A new TFF must be signed before you start the additional work.
  • The TF must agree to the additional work in advance, and a new TFF will be completed for the extra hours. The TF may decline the additional work without any negative consequences.

Support and Reimbursement:

  • TFs teaching courses will receive marking, Teaching Assistantship, and secretarial support similar to other courses in the department.
  • The Employer will provide TFs with access to necessary course materials and office supplies. Additional materials may require prior written approval, and the TF should provide receipts for reimbursement.

Employment Insurance Eligibility:

  • For Employment Insurance eligibility, a TF will be considered to have worked 232 hours per half credit course per Academic Term, prorated based on their percentage of responsibility for the course.
