Emergency Food Support – Feedback Wanted!

Your Program Feedback Here!

Dear PSAC 901 Members,

With profound disappointment, we announce the Emergency Food Support Fund will close as of November 24, 2023, due to the complete depletion of available funds. Since its inception in January 2023, the program has received over 1,500 applications and provided more than 800 persons with grocery gift cards, totaling an allocation of more than $80,000.

This emergency fund was created in response to the urgent need to address food insecurity among graduate student employees, and relied on available funds including several significant donations from the Queen’s University Faculty Association (QUFA) members. However, the demand for assistance has far surpassed our available financial capacity, and we find ourselves unable to sustain support for our food-insecure members and their dependents.

We understand the gravity of this situation and acknowledge the critical need for such support. It is imperative for Queen’s University, as an educational institution and employer, to recognize and act upon its responsibility to eliminate hunger and poverty among its students and employees.

After the closure of the Emergency Food Fund, PSAC 901 will continue to advocate for improved wages and the elimination of tuition fees. Our Childcare, Gender Affirmation, Mental Health, and Professional Development Bursaries remain in operation. The Society of Graduate and Professional Students (SGPS) opened a fund to try and also support this important issue but the demand is simply too overwhelming and ultimately, it’s our position at the employer needs to step up. Please visit https://psac901.org/bursaries/ for more information, or contact staff.psac901@gmail.com if you need support navigating these resources.

In solidarity,

The PSAC 901 Executive Committee
