Queen’s University Research Assistants

Information Session

Dear Queen’s Graduate Research Assistants,

On 16 February 2017, Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) was certified as the bargaining agent for Queen’s University Research Assistants (RAs) by the Ontario Labour Relations Board after RAs voted overwhelmingly to join our union. PSAC local 901 is excited to welcome Queen’s Graduate RAs.

If you currently work as a research assistant and/or hold a research assistantship, or have done so in the past, we urge you to attend the RA Information Session on Wednesday September 27 at 6pm in Robert Sutherland Hall, Room 554.

We will discuss our next steps and how you can get involved so that we, as a united group of graduate student employees, can get the best possible first contract with improved wages and working conditions.

We believe all RAs at Queen’s are part of this new bargaining unit; however, for many of you, Queen’s University does not. This is outrageous and together we will challenge the employer’s attempt to deliberately exclude you!

We believe what you do as Research Assistants is work, and will challenge Queen’s through the bargaining process and other avenues! We want a meaningful first collective agreement that strengthens RA working rights because RA work is valuable and contributes to the Queen’s community and the broader academe. Together, with the support of thousands of other PSAC members, we are working to fight for the rights of all RAs.

Attend the RA Information Session on Wednesday September 27 at 6pm to get more information, and to make your voice heard! Please email [email protected] with the subject Research Assistant if you have questions or would like to set up a meeting.

The Ontario Labour Relations Board defined this new bargaining unit at Queens University as:

“all registered graduate students who are employed by Queen’s University, in the City Kingston,

as Research Assistants, save and except supervisors and persons above rank of supervisor,

employees for whom a trade union held bargaining rights on April 23, 2014, persons who hold

appointments to the Academic of the University as defined by the University’s Statement on

Adjunct Academic Staff and Academic Assistants, persons who hold appointments to General

Support of the University, full voting members of Board of Trustees, and members of the legal or

medical profession employed in their professional capacity.”

We look forward to seeing you soon.Screen Shot 2017-09-09 at 9.29.02 AM

In solidarity,

Public Service Alliance of Canada Local 901
