Leaves
Getting Time Off:
“23.01 The Employer may in its sole discretion grant leaves of absence with or without pay to Employees for legitimate personal reasons which may include requests related to Domestic or Sexual Violence Leave as defined in the Employment Standards Act or leave for gender affirmation processes or procedures. The Employer will exercise this discretion in a manner that is reasonable, fair and equitable. Employees who are granted leave under this Article related to Domestic or Sexual Violence or gender affirmation processes or procedures are entitled to return to their appointment, provided it has not ended.”
How Leave Affects Work Hours:
- The time you take off will be subtracted from the total hours you are supposed to work. You do not have to make up those hours later.
Sick Leave:
- You can take up to twelve (12) hours of paid sick leave per term if you are too sick to work.
- If you need more time off due to illness or injury, you can take unpaid sick leave. You may need to present a medical certificate upon Employer’s request.
Pregnancy and Parental Leave:
- If you are pregnant, you can take time off before and after giving birth. Just tell your employer in advance.
- If you become a parent through birth or adoption, you can also take parental leave. The length of leave depends on whether you took pregnancy leave.
Leave for Bereavement:
- If someone close to you dies, you can take time off to make arrangements and mourn. You will get paid for a certain number of days, depending on your relationship with the deceased.
Court Leave
- If you have to serve on a jury or go to court as a witness, you can take time off without losing pay. Any money you receive from the court will be subtracted from your pay.
Leaves for Conferences and Training:
- You may be able to take unpaid time off for labour conferences, conventions, union training, or academic conferences.
- If you are invited to speak at a conference, you might be able to reschedule your work or take time off without pay.
Other Types of Leave:
- There might be other types of leave available, such as caring for a loved one , religious observance, military duty, or other leaves required by law. Each has its own rules and requirements.
