Queen’s University and Teaching Assistants and Teaching Fellows Ratify new Collective Agreement
Kingston, Ontario – Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Teaching Fellows (TFs) (Public Service Alliance of Canada Local 901, Unit 1), ratified a new collective agreement with Queen’s University, which will expire on April 30, 2021.
The union represents approximately 1500 TAs and TFs who work in the classrooms, conferences, tutorials and laboratories. Negotiations and conciliation over eight months led to progressive gains: a significant improvement in benefit contributions, an increase in paid sick leave, paid university-wide training, new protections for whistleblowing, a raise in salary and retroactive pay.
“Queen’s University almost tripled their benefits contribution for our members and this renewed agreement represents a major improvement in our pay cheques,” said Alexander Rey, a Teaching Assistant in Civil Engineering.
“TAs and TFs achieved much closer parity with equivalent part-time workers on campus,” said Stéphanie McKnight, a member of the union’s Bargaining Team.
“Strong membership mobilization and unwavering support made our contract gains possible,” said Craig Berggold, PSAC Local 901 President.
The PSAC TA/TF Bargaining Team members included Craig Berggold (TF Cultural Studies), Stéphanie McKnight (TA Cultural Studies), Alexander Rey (TA Engineering) and PSAC Negotiator Jawara Gairey.
